Only a leisurely walk away are the Historic Fishponds, created by the ancient Hawaiians to guarantee a source of fish, and they still contain a variety of unique sea life to this day.

Five minutes from the entrance to The Villages is the Malama Petroglyph trail, which has a great ocean view, many great spots to picnic, and takes you through the Puako Petroglyph Archeological District. The district has thousands of petroglyphs, rocks with artwork carved into them by the ancient Hawaiians. From here you can take the Beach Access Trail. It goes past Holoholokai Beach Park, through the Fishponds to become the ancient Ala Kahakai trail (which has amazing scenery), and around Mauna Lani Point to Honoka'ope Beach (aka 49 Black Sands Beach). When you arrive at Honoka’ope Beach, you will be treated to an uncrowded, scenic beach of dark sand that is often visited by groups of honu, green sea turtles.

 

The beauty of Big Island is that it’s much less crowded than O’ahu, providing you with the perfect environment to relax and enjoy everything the largest of the Hawai’ian islands has to offer.
